The Top 150 Songs of 2007

Seems like such a long time ago, no?

150.  Between the Wolf and the Dog – Electrelane
149.  Our Velocity – Maximo Park
148.  Out Life is not a Movie – Okervill River
147.  Detlef Schrempf – Band of Horses
146.  Country Caravan – Blitzen Trapper
145.  Please Be Patient With Me – Wilco
144.  Ruby – Kaiser Chiefs
143.  No One’s Gonna Love You – Band of Horses
142.  Antichrist Television Blues – Arcade Fire
141.  XR2 – MIA
140.  My Old Ways – Dr. Dog
139.  Someone Great – LCD Soundsystem

Murphy as the voice for the hipster does get it.  It’s 100% impossible to be hip for more than 5 years. Personally, I’d like bands to keep on goin’ and making shitty material because it’s always fun for “the next album”.  After all, Modest Mouse’s break is only helping their next album, and they’re now close to 20 years from their beginnings, so how good can it possibly be if it ever happens?

138.  Dead Sound – The Raveonettes

This reminds me of Ybor City pre-Centro Ybor.  We used to be quite a gothic community down here in Tampa.  Granted, I was the anti-thesis, being a hippie ’n all back then, and yeah, I kinda like Centro Ybor now.  It makes me feel less likely to be shot … or blood sucked out of me.

137.  Past In Present – Feist
136.  Corrupt – Dalek
135.  Kiss Kiss – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
134.  Rabbit Run – The Teeth
133.  Effect and Cause – White Stripes
132.  Object – Ween
131.  Slowly Turning into You – White Stripes
130.  Resurrection Farm – Iron & Wine
129.  Plasticities – Andrew Bird
128.  Earth Intruders – Bjork
127.  Black is Back – Public Enemy
126.  Rhythm & Soul – Spoon
125.  Armchairs – Andrew Bird
124.  Ragoo – Kings of Leon
123.  Learnin to Love – Ween
122.  Black Like Me – Spoon
121.  Foundations – Kate Nash
120.  Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car – Iron & Wine
119.  Finer Feelings – Spoon
118.  Fiesta – Ween
117.  Fluorescent Adolescent – Arctic Monkeys
116.  Phantom Limb – The Shins
115.  Alaska – Dr. Dog
114.  Windowsill – Arcade Fire
113.  Amerikan Gangster – Public Enemy

Chuck had his ferocity back in double-aught 7.  8 years of Dubya must have destroyed him.  No one ever gives Dubya credit for the angst he inspired in tons of great musicals acts.

112.  Fireworks – Animal Collective
111.  Lovesong of the Buzzard – Iron & Wine
110.  Men’s Needs – The Cribs
109.  Overpowered – Roisin Murphy
108.  Martyr of My Love For You – White Stripes
107.  Is Is – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
106.  Yellow – The Teeth

After years and years of never understanding the line, “This boy had teeth, and he got dropped” and the Beastie Boys “Paul Revere” song, I think I finally got it after watching the movie Disco Godfather.  Some people  just have many large teeth when they smile and they deserve to be dropped.

105.  Sweet Life - !!!
104.  Hate It Here – Wilco
103.  You! Me! Dancing! – Los Campesinos!
102.  Atlas – Battles
101.  Rag and Bone – White Stripes
100.  The General Specific – Band of Horses
99.  All I Need – Radiohead
98.  Paragraphs Relentless - Dalek
97.  Black Wave – The Shins
96.  Worst Trip – Dr. Dog
95.  2080 – Yeasayer
94.  Freak Out – Liars
93.  Bodysnatchers – Radiohead
92.  Molly Make  Him Pay – The Teeth
91.  Your Party – Ween
90.  With Every Heartbeat – Robyn
89.  Jigsaw Falling into Place – Radiohead
88.  Spitting Venom – Modest Mouse
87.  The Limit To Your Love – Feist
86.  What Light – Wilco
85.  You Don’t Know What Love Is – White Stripes
84.  Sex, Drugs and Violence – Public Enemy
83.  Neon Bible – Arcade Fire
82.  Steam Ingenious – Modest Mouse
81.  Ball of the Dead Rat – The Teeth
80.  Islands on the Coast – Band of Horses
79.  Impossible Germany – Wilco
78.  Fake Empire – The National
77.  The Past is a Grotesque Animal – Of Montreal
76.  Faust Arp – Radiohead
75.  D.A.N.C.E. – Justice

Part of the electronic scene admirably makes disco music, or at least tries to reach the realization of the pinnacle of what disco could be.  That being said, as technology ages, I wonder how these songs will stand up to the test of time, and if they will fail … like real disco.

74.  Mistaken For Strangers – The National
73.  To the East – Electrelane
72.  Peacebone – Animal Collective
71.  One Two Three Four – Feist

Is it possible to listen to this very unique and great pop song, but not feel as though you’re about to buy an Apple product?  There is a legitimate beef behind “selling out” sometimes and this wonderful song proves it.  You don’t feel wonderful when you hear it, but you do if you listen to it (or maybe vice versa, I forget what Wesley Snipes has to say on occasion).  Essentially, this song is so sold out, that her follow up album would be devoid of anything remotely commercial.

70.  Little Motel – Modest Mouse
69.  A New Name - !!!
68.  Cigarettes, Wedding Bands – Band of Horses
67.  In a Razor Town – Jason Isbell
66.  Reckoner – Radiohead
65.  Time to Get Away – LCD Soundsystem
64.  Blue Balloon – Ween
63.  Sleeping Lessons – The Shins
62.  Sci-Fi Kid – Blitzen Trapper
61.  Weird Fishes/Arpeggi  – Radiohead
60.  Bend over Beethoven - !!!
59.  Sound of Silver – LCD Soundsystem
58.  Catch Hell Blues – White Stripes
57.  Middle Man – Bright Eyes
56.  Summer Town – Blitzen Trapper
55.  Watch the Tapes – LCD Soundsystem
54.  Is there a Ghost in My House? – Band of Horses
53.  Parting of the Sensory – Modest Mouse
52.  No Pussy Blues – Grinderman

I initially was going to comment on how this band sounded good, but ripped off Nick Cave a little.  You could imagine the embarrassment I would’ve felt if I didn’t do a little more research on them.

51.  Wild Mountain Nation – Blitzen Trapper
50.  Must Be the Moon - !!!
49.  Walken – Wilco
48.  Long and Whining Road – Public Enemy
47.  Dashboard – Modest Mouse
46.  Brainstorm – Arctic Monkeys
45.  Ode to LRC – Band of Horses
44.  Bird Flu – MIA
43.  Umbrella – Rihanna

What the hell does Rihanna do to the guys she dates to make them crazy?  We were all on her side after the Chris Brown thing sure, but after Tony Parker gets a black eye, something’s fishy with her.  I think she’s one of those MTV girls.

42.  15 Step – Radiohead
41.  Clairaudients – Bright Eyes
40.  Keep the Car Running – Arcade Fire
39.  North American Scum – LCD Soundsystem
38.  Invisible – Modest Mouse

Despite Isaac’s protests, I do remain invisible inside my car.  Sometimes it seems like car space was the internet before the internet, meaning, you know how everyone acts like an asshole on the internet?  We all feel so invisible inside our cars, we’re not nearly as tough as we are on the internet, but we’re still much tougher behind the wheel than we would normally be.  For instance, I’ve told many people to fuck off and given the bird to countless victims in the car, and that number is greatly reduced when not in the car (or on the internet).

37.  Boyz – MIA
36.  Fans – Kings of Leon
35.  You Are My Face – Wilco
34.  Sea Lion Woman – Feist
33.  Don’t Make Me A Target – Spoon
32.  Missed the Boat – Modest Mouse
31.  Yadnus - !!!
30.  Black Mirror – Arcade Fire
29.  Friends – Ween
28.  Plaster Casts of Everything – Liars
27.  Fly Trapped in a Jar – Modest Mouse
26.  Side With the Seeds – Wilco
25.  My Moon My Man – Feist
24.  All My Friends – LCD Soundsystem
23.  Myth Takes - !!!
22.  Weight of Lies – Avett Brothers
21.  Satan Said Dance – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
20.  Conquest – White Stripes
19.  Sky Blue Sky – Wilco
18.  Heart of Hearts - !!!
17.  So Sorry – Feist
16.  Sailing to Byzantium – Liars
15.  Turn on Me – The Shins
14.  Get Innocuous – LCD Soundsystem

Great song that Grand Theft Auto IV made even better.  I don’t hate to say this, but being involved in a high speed car chase to a song is something most songs should be tested by.  You’d be surprised at the ones that pass versus the ones that fail.  For instance, Patsy Cline can past this test and Motley Crue can fail … well, not Motley Crue, but you know what I’m saying.

13.  I Feel It All – Feist

If you don’t like this song, you’re probably a bad person.

12.  Little Cream Soda – White Stripes

Jack White put some of his best songs on his last album with Meg.  Sure, with all the wonderful studio production, you could argue they lost that raw power they had on their first couple albums, but these songs are much better.   Fact of the matter is, if I only get one Stripes album on the deserted island, I’m taking Icky Thump.  Hipsters go boooooooooooooo.

11.  Either Way – Wilco

This song survived a car commercial.  For me, that’s pretty darn impressive … and not just any commercial, but a commercial where some doucehebag steals a car just to ride it and then leaves it where he found it.  Yes, after all that, I still love this song.

10.  People as Place as People – Modest Mouse
9.  Icky Thump – White Stripes

You’d think after AC/DC’s “Long Way to the Top” song, you’d never have great bag pipes in a rock song again, but you were wrong.  Here’s my thing, why don’t standard computer keyboards have a “lightning bolt” key in case you really have to type AC/DC?  The slash just isn’t the same.  Believe me, when Poison formed, and they passed on Slash during guitar player try-outs (true story), if he said his name was “Lightning Bolt”, well, we’d all be going to Poison school on Sunday morning (yes, I’m the only sucka waiting for “Rock of Love 4”).

8.  Jimmy – MIA
7.  Houseclouds – Liars
6.  The Underdog – Spoon

I’m all of a sudden concerned that Horrible Bosses hijacked this song.  I love the song, I love the movie, yet I don’t want to think of the movie when I hear the song, and now I do.  I suppose it could be worse, like it could have Cameron Diaz in it or something.  At least this song doesn’t make me think of Cameron Diaz.  That would suck.

5.  Us and Them – LCD Soundsystem
4.  Aly, Walk With Me – The Raveonettes
3.  Bamboo Banga – MIA

When we all come back, who the hell doesn’t come back with powa powa?  Whatever you wanna say about this spoiled brat, if I said she comes back with even more powa powa than her debut album, you’d have to agree.  I’m a road runner.

2.  March Into the Sea – Modest Mouse

The Mouse always starts out an album with utmost tremendousosity, and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is no different.  In the 2000s, what the Mouse lacked in abundance, they definitely made up for with 5 -10 great post Antarctica  tunes.

1.  Paper Planes – MIA
